Migrating to ArcGIS Pro: User Interface

ArcGIS Pro's interface is designed with a ribbon-based layout, similar to that of Microsoft Office, which organizes tools and commands into logical groups and tabs for easier access and navigation. This streamlined interface replaces the multiple toolbars and menu of ArcMap, providing a more efficient workflow. The contextual nature of the ribbon adapts to the current task, displaying relevant tools and options, reducing clutter and improving productivity. Additionally, the integration of the Catalog pane and project-based structure ensures all project elements are readily accessible, making data management and organization more intuitive.

Software requirement(s):

  • ArcGIS Pro 3.2.2

The ArcGIS Pro user interface includes a ribbon, views, and panes.

Component Description How is it different from ArcMap
1 The Project tab provides access to application settings and other configurable properties. This is comparable to the settings on the Customize menu: ArcMap Options, ArcCatalog Options, ArcGlobe Options, and ArcScene Options, respectively.
2 The ribbon organizes commands on a series of tabs. These tabs are more context sensitive than the toolbars in ArcMap and may change based on the state of the application.
3 The Command Search box helps you find and open geoprocessing tools and run user interface commands. You can also access help topics related to your search terms. This is comparable to the Search window in ArcMap in that you can find and open geoprocessing tools.
4 The Contents pane displays items related to the active view, which may be a map, a scene, a layout, or a view of the catalog. This is similar to the way ArcMap displays the contents of a document in the table of contents.
5 Table view. Views—such as the map, scene, and table views in this example—are the primary work areas in ArcGIS Pro. Views are comparable to the data and layout views in ArcMap and the 3D view in ArcGlobe and ArcScene.
6 The Catalog pane helps you manage items in a project. This is similar to the Catalog window in ArcMap.
