Migrating to ArcGIS Pro: Advantages & Key Differences

Migrating from ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro offers numerous advantages and introduces some key differences that users should be aware of. ArcGIS Pro provides improved performance, a more intuitive interface, and enhanced capabilities compared to ArcMap.

Main Advantages

  • Improved Performance

ArcGIS Pro's 64-bit architecture allows for faster processing and the ability to handle larger datasets more efficiently.

  • Integrated 2D and 3D Visualization

Users can view and analyze data in both 2D and 3D within a single project, making it easier to understand spatial relationships and patterns.

  • Simplified Workflows

The ribbon interface in ArcGIS Pro is designed to be more intuitive and user-friendly, with tools and functions organized in a way that streamlines common tasks.

  • Project-Based Structure

All elements of a project, including maps, layouts, tools, and data connections, are stored within a single project file, enhancing organization and collaboration.

  • Advanced Editing Tools

This is probably my favorite! ArcGIS Pro has the ability to edit feature services on the fly. ArcMap would allow you to view these services in a 'read-only' , however, with Pro you can actually pull in these layers and edit them in real time (assuming editing privileges are enabled). No more starting or stopping the Editor!!! With ArcGIS Pro, you simply go to the edit menu and can begin selecting which tool you would like to use without having to start/stop or select which layer you want to perform edits on.

  • ArcGIS Online Integration

Seamless integration with ArcGIS Online allows for easy sharing and collaboration, access to a wealth of online data and services, and cloud-based analysis and storage options.

Key Differences:

  • Interface

The switch from a toolbar-based interface in ArcMap to a ribbon-based interface in ArcGIS Pro may require some adjustment, but it ultimately promotes a more streamlined and efficient workflow.

  • Projects (*.aprx)

Unlike ArcMap, where maps and layouts are separate, ArcGIS Pro organizes everything within a single project (including multiple maps), making it easier to manage and share. No more *.mxd file extension! It takes time to get used to it, but it does make a lot of sense when looking at it from a project basis.

  • Symbology and Labeling

ArcGIS Pro provides more advanced symbology and labeling options, allowing for greater customization and control over map appearance.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Customize the Ribbon

Tailor the ribbon interface to fit your workflow by adding, removing, or rearranging tools.

  • Use Tasks for Workflow Automation

Create tasks to automate repetitive processes, ensuring consistency and efficiency in your work.

  • Take Advantage of the Catalog Pane

Use the Catalog pane to manage data, maps, and toolboxes efficiently within your projects.

  • Explore the Learning Resources

ArcGIS Pro offers extensive help documentation and tutorials that can aid in learning new features and tools.

  • Leverage ArcGIS Online

Utilize ArcGIS Online for data storage, sharing, and accessing ready-to-use layers and services that can enhance your projects.

Migrating to ArcGIS Pro from ArcMap provides users with a more powerful and flexible platform for GIS analysis and mapping.
